We at Tuolumne County understand the difficulties and uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders. We take responsibility in ensuring our community is as safe and secure as possible during this pandemic. Tuolumne County depends on your timely property tax payments to provide continuity of critical services during this crisis, such as public safety, public health, and schools that are now providing food and distance learning to thousands of students who are sheltering in place with their families.
The second installment of County taxes become delinquent on Friday, April 10. The deadline is established by State law and the Tax Collector does not have authority to extend this date.
To avoid late penalties and encourage social distancing, we strongly recommend making your payment early by clicking the link below, by calling the telephone number below, or by mail. Mailed remittance must be postmarked by April 10. If you utilize your bank's bill-pay service, be sure to allow ample processing time. The Tax Collector's office window is open from 8:00 am to noon weekdays and there is a drop-box in front of the Administration Building until 5:00 pm to submit property tax payments.
After April 10, a late penalty of 10% of the installment amount plus $10 is applied to the balance due. If not paid by July 1, the unpaid balance will be designated in default, at which time there is a $15 redemption fee, and interest will begin to accumulate at a rate of 1.5% per month.
If your ability to pay timely has been directly affected by COVID-19 or a stay-at-home order, you may be eligible for penalty cancellation by completing and submitting a Request for Penalty Cancellation Form after April 10, 2020 and before July 1, 2020. Please provide supporting documents with your Request showing evidence of a COVID-19 related hardship, such as quarantine or loss of employment. Payments must be submitted with your Request. Unfortunately, current state law does not allow the Tax Collector to cancel late penalties due to financial hardship alone or generally when timely tax payment was possible by some reasonable method. The Tax Collector will consider all requests on a case-by-case basis.
Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT)
Hotels and other short-term rental operators are required to collect TOT from guests at the time rent is collected. The TOT is to be held separately in trust until it is remitted to the County quarterly. The Tax Collector does not have authority to authorize the operator to spend the public funds or to extend the April 30, 2020 due date. If paid late, the balance is subject to a 10% penalty on the first day late, another 10% penalty after 30 days, and an additional 0.5% per month interest.
If your business is facing difficulties due to COVID-19, we recommend visiting www.tuolumnecounty.ca.gov/1265/COVID-19 for emergency assistance resources.
