South County Ambulance Tax Up for Renewal
The current Groveland Ambulance Tax sunsets on June 30, 2018, and the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors will be asked on February 20, 2018 to approve a ballot measure for the June 05, 2018 election to extend the ambulance tax for five additional years at $90 per improved parcel. The ambulance tax has been in place for 29 years and requires a vote of the people to be renewed. Because of the rural nature of the South County, residents have historically approved the ambulance tax.
The ambulance tax revenue is a significant contributing factor in the County’s ability to continue to provide 24/7 paramedic advanced life support services in the Groveland area. However, even with the ambulance tax, the system requires a subsidy to balance operations due to low call volume.
The current tax rate is $70.00 for improved and commercial parcels. The tax does not apply to unimproved parcels. The County is proposing for the tax rate to be set at $90.00 from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2023.
There will be a public meeting on January 24, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Groveland Community Hall, where County staff will be providing information and answering questions regarding the proposed ambulance tax.
