Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office announced today the filing and conviction statistics for the first quarter of their DUI Prosecution Unit. The DUI Prosecution Unit was created in October 2024, and funded by a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).
The statistics for the first quarter of the grant are as follows:
DUI Cases Reviewed: 83
DUI Cases Filed: 81
DUI Convictions: 67
Wet Reckless Convictions: 13
During the first quarter, the Unit went to trial on one case where the defendant was accused of driving under the influence of methamphetamine. That defendant was found guilty by a jury and is currently awaiting sentencing.
The DUI Prosecution Unit also has hosted the first quarterly law enforcement roundtable meeting, which was attended by the California Highway Patrol, Sonora Police Department, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, and Tuolumne County Probation. This roundtable was a time to focus on increasing knowledge and enforcement of DUI offenses specifically. Additionally, the Unit Prosecutor attended Standardized Field Sobriety Test training in San Francisco in October.
The DUI Prosecution Unit is currently staffed by one experienced prosecutor from the District Attorney’s Office. The program is currently funded through September 2025. The District Attorney’s Office intends to apply to renew the grant for the following grant year.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
