Today, Tuolumne County District Attorney Cassandra Jenecke announced that charges were filed against 50-year-old Mary McGrew of Sonora for a misdemeanor violation of Penal Code section 273a(b), Child Abuse, and a misdemeanor violation of Penal Code section 243.2, Battery on School Property.
The charges arise out of an incident that occurred at Sonora Elementary School on January 23, 2025, in Ms. McGrew’s capacity as a speech therapist at the school. The allegations include that Ms. McGrew assaulted a seven-year-old child with autism in a classroom.
The incident was first reported to Sonora Police Department on the evening of February 3, 2025. Sonora Police Department launched a criminal investigation and provided the related report to the District Attorney’s Office on the morning of February 6, 2025. After review of the reports, DA Jenecke filed charges and requested a warrant from Tuolumne County Superior Court. That warrant was granted, and Sonora Police Department arrested Ms. McGrew on the same day.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Sonora Police Department Detective Thomas Brickley at 209-532-8141.
