[ARCHIVED] Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness

"EA

Sonora, Calif., May 30, 2016 – In California, elder abuse is significantly underreported. For every case of elder or dependent adult abuse reported to Adult Protective Services, the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, and law enforcement, 24 are unknown. To help increase reporting, the Tuolumne County Elder Abuse Task Force is teaming up with older adult advocates from throughout the County to educate our communities, elected officials, and law enforcement about elder and dependent adult abuse during the KNOW ABUSE REPORT ABUSE campaign and World Elder Abuse Day.

Please join us in recognizing June 15, 2018 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On Monday, June 4th at 5:00 pm at the City of Sonora Chambers, 94 N. Washington Street, downtown Sonora (2nd floor), District Attorney, Laura Krieg, will request the Sonora City Council proclaim June 15, 2018 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Ms. Krieg will then address the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, June 5th at the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, 2 South Green Street, downtown Sonora, (4th floor). We will then reconvene at Adventist Health Sonora to put 144 flags up, each representing elders affected by elder abuse in Tuolumne County.

We invite you to join us for these activities honoring elders affected by elder abuse and to join us on Wednesday, June 13th for the Elder Empowerment Conference at the Hotel & Conference Center at Black Oak Casino Resort from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. This information filled free event will feature Christina Snider, Executive Secretary of the Native American Heritage Commission and Tribal Advisor to Governor Edmund G. Brown and Dr. Patrick Arbore, founder and director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services, a program of the Institute on Aging. Local speakers include Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians Tribal members Zandra & Dore Bietz, Ginger Martin from the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office Victim/Witness Program and Bob White, Prevention Programs, YES Partnership Director, Amador Tuolumne Community Action Agency.
